This Issue

The focus of this edition of IFMH Inform is ‘E-learning and information literacy: initiatives and challenges’, drawing on the presentations of speakers at the IFMH study day in Leeds on 14th November 2005.  Topics covered include undertaking literacy audits, virtual learning environments and evaluating information literacy.

We’re also pleased to include reports from not one, but two, previous recipients of the Research in the Workplace Award (RIWA)* sponsored by IFM Healthcare since its inception in 1999/2000.    Annette Thain, RIWA winner in 2001/2, provides an update on work on managed knowledge networks for NHS Scotland e-Library.  This article represents the first in a series of forthcoming articles from the e-library in Scotland.  There is also a report from Nicola Pearce-Smith, the 2003/4 RIWA* winner, of her randomised controlled trial comparing the effect of e-learning, with a taught workshop, on the knowledge and search skills of health professionals; particularly topical for this issue of IFMH Inform.

I’m sure you’ll agree it makes interesting reading.

* RIWA 2003/4 was sponsored by IFM Healthcare, the NeLH Librarian Development Network, the University Medical School Librarians Group, the University Health Sciences Libraries and Libraries for Nursing.

Evidence Based Librarianship: 16th-19th October 2005, Brisbane, Australia (Web site:  http://conferences.alia.org.au/ebl2005/)

Delegates attended this third Evidence Based Librarianship conference from as far afield as Australia, Brazil, Canada, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Fuji, Hong Kong, New Zealand, Norway, the United Kingdom and the USA.  As sponsors of the conference, IFMH has been assured that delegates were dazzled by the splendour of the IFMH pencils included in delegates’ packs.  Find out what other delights got delegates talking in the report from our roving reporter, Alison Brettle.

Are You Getting Enough?

Thank you if you’ve already renewed you IFM Healthcare subscription or, if your invoice is still in your pending tray, there’s still time to take advantage of the competitive subscription rates which will remain unchanged in 2006.

To ensure you are getting the most from your subscription, you may also be interested in joining ‘ifmhmembers.’ Perhaps you have a query regarding service level agreements, reference management software packages or collection development.  Whatever you question, ‘ifmhmembers’ could provide you with the answers.

‘ifmhmembers’ is an email discussion list enabling you to share information, questions and thoughts with fellow group IFMH members and the IFMH committee.  ‘ifmhmembers’ operates in a similar way to JISC mailing lists, but with the reassurance of knowing that your message is going to a group of likeminded professionals with a shared interest in utilising information for the management of healthcare.

To join ‘ifmhmembers’, which is an IFMH members only service, visit the discussion list web page at http://groups.yahoo.com/groups/ifmhmembers  Alternatively, contact Kath Wright, IFMH Membership Secretary (tel: 01904 321460 email: ), with your email address and she will register you with ifmhmembers.  NB The first time you visit the yahoo groups web site (http://groups.yahoo.com/groups/ifmhmembers), you will be asked to register a username and password.  Remember to keep a note!
