Changing
Rooms: Designing an Information and Library Service fit for the
future
Ray Phillips, Head of Information Services Development,
The King’s Fund
The way people
access information is changing - advances in technology and the
wealth of information available online means that information
seekers no longer need to travel to seek information, and
libraries must compete for the attention and patronage of users
even more than before. These changes have meant The King’s Fund
Information and Library Service has had a decline in visitors to
its library and a steady increase in use of its online services.
The King’s Fund, recognizing the importance of information
services and library skills, wants to reposition its Information
and Library Service (ILS) to take advantage of the changes and to
thrive. The King’s Fund as an organisation is also changing; it
wants to reach out to more individuals and organisations involved
in delivering health care, and be more responsive to those who
engage with it and use its services. In order to be more
responsive and enhance the experience of visitors, it has
re-designed the ground floor of its building in central London.
The re-design will see the library moved to the front of the
building to attract more users, and the remit of the space will be
broader.
