Success in Project Management – an informative and
practical workshop for those wanting to improve their project
management skills
Jacky Berry, Librarian,
BMA Library
People
management skills are often overlooked in favour of technical
skills in project management. However effective people management,
team management, influencing and communication skills, enable
project managers to gain commitment from the project team and
achieve the performance needed to successfully deliver against
objectives. Jacky Berry, the Librarian at the British Medical
Association (BMA) gave an informative and practical presentation
on people and project management using the change management
project at the BMA Library as a case study. This article is an
overview of her presentation, covering an introduction to the BMA
library, the project brief, the importance of people in projects,
the role and skills required of the project manager, motivating
and communicating with staff and Jacky’s learning points from her
experience. She also gives a brief outline of a practical session
that covered others experiences of people management with projects
and identifying the skills required for the Perfect Project
Manager (PPM).

Keeping Your
Balls in the Air: A T-Q-M Approach to Project Management
Andrew Booth, Reader in Evidence Based
Information Practice, School of Health and Related Research
(ScHARR), University of Sheffield
Put simply, successful project
management involves a juggling act between the competing demands
of Time, Quality and Money. Attention to one particular “ball” at
the expense of the other two leads to projects going overtime,
delivering suboptimal outcomes or going over-budget. Each of these
three components is accompanied by tools to help in planning and
for monitoring and adjusting once the project is underway. These
tools form the basis of a project manager's toolkit. This article
presents examples from the author’s evaluations of healthcare
information projects to illustrate the challenges and demands of
successful project management. The author concludes with salutary
lessons on why projects fail.
