Access to knowledge, information and the evidence-base of health and social care
Joan Hunter, Library and Knowledge Services Manager, East of England Strategic Health Authority

Adequate knowledge, information resources and services are essential for the development and implementation of evidence-based practice. The Skills for Care Learning Resource Network in the East of England has funded a project to increase access to library, knowledge and information services for social care staff. If successful, it will provide an excellent example of integrated working between the NHS and social care.  This article is based on a presentation given at the CILIP Health Libraries Group annual conference at Eastbourne in July 2006.

NHS libraries working with the hospices and universities in Leeds

Helen Thompson, Librarian, 5 Leeds PCTs Health Informatics Service, Leeds North West Primary Care Trust

The Leeds NHS librarians, together with their higher education colleagues, are working towards a vision of seamless services across the Leeds Health Community.  This article outlines two of the areas of work of the Partnership Group, which is one of the work streams involved in delivering this vision.  The link between the NHS and St Gemma’s Hospice has been developing over several years, providing personal computers (PCs) for the hospice library, and facilitating information skills training for both organisations.  A joint bid has also been written for the creation of the post of Clinical Librarian for Palliative Care. The NHS libraries are working with both universities in the city, via the practice learning facilitators, seeking to ensure that the information needs of the mentors of students on placement are fully supported.  “Transferable skills lectures” for final year students have also been trialled. The objectives and benefits achieved from the collaborations are discussed.   This article is based on a presentation given at the CILIP Health Libraries Group annual conference at Eastbourne in July 2006.

Benefits of collaboration across the NHS, HE and public library sectors

Pam Bailey, Principal Information Specialist, Northumbria University Library, and Sheena Hanes, Library & Knowledge Services Manager, Northumberland, Tyne and Wear NHS Trust

In 2002, a study at Northumbria University Library examined learning resources provision for health students in the clinical setting.  A key recommendation was the need for more effective collaboration between university library staff, NHS library staff and academics. This imperative was used to shape a project that delivered a CD based information literacy programme for post-registration health students, which would help students make effective use of NHS and university learning resources.
