People with disabilities are amongst the most marginalized and stigmatised
within Namibian society, particularly in rural areas like Kunene where official
support networks are more fragmented and communication more
difficult. The main objective of Anita's and Machteld's placements is to
raise awareness on issues concerning people with disabilities amongst
care-givers and key service delivery agencies such as Community Based
Organisations. This in turn will ensure that access and quality to treatment
and social inclusion is vastly improved. Anita and Machteld will be working to
train Community Based Rehabilitation (CBR) Workers in an area where there are
limited resources and budgets. A small grant from IFMH would allow Anita and
Machteld to improve CBR services in Kunene Region through better training to
volunteers. The volunteers will produce
a manual, which will be given to social workers, physiotherapists and medical
rehabilitation officers. The training manual will be used to structure and
organize volunteer training. Fifteen copies will be printed and distributed in
the region. They will also produce files containing hand-outs, referral forms
and assessment forms, which will be produced and distributed to the 120 CBR
volunteers in the Kunene region. Certificates, T-shirts, badges and umbrellas
will be distributed to CBR volunteers.
